Champions League Preview and Highlights
Champions League Preview and Highlights

Chelsea will be keen to get back to winning ways against Marseille in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, while Arsenal face a tricky trip to Partizan Belgrade.

Chelsea have suffered back-to-back defeats in domestic action and will want to address that stumble when they welcome former star Didier Deschamps and his Marseille side to Stamford Bridge, in a game which can be seen live on Sky Sports HD 2 & 2.

The other game in Group F on Matchday Two sees Spartak Moscow take on Slovakian minnows MSK Zilina, with events in the Russian capital due to get underway at 5.30pm.

Arsenal, like Chelsea, have seen their bright start to the season suffer a slight hitch, following a setback against West Brom on Saturday, and they will need to handle a highly-charged atmosphere away at Partizan Belgrade in their latest outing.

Braga were given a harsh European lesson by the Gunners in their opening encounter of the group stages and the Portuguese outfit need to raise their game if they are to avoid a similar fate against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Heavyweight

Group G throws up another heavyweight encounter in midweek, with former winners Ajax and AC Milan set to lock horns in a glamour encounter in Amsterdam.

The other tie in that group sees Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, who are yet to hit top gear this season, head to France to take on an Auxerre outfit that has endured a torrid start to the 2010/11 campaign.

Last season’s runners-up Bayern Munich got off to a winning start in their efforts to go one better this time around and Louis van Gaal will be looking for another three-point haul away at FC Basel.

Finally, faltering Roma will be looking to avoid a repeat of their shock defeat on home soil against CFR Cluj from 2008 when the two sides renew acquaintances at Stadio Olimpico.

Jennie Finch Biography

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Jennie Lynn Finch (born September 3, 1980 in La Mirada, California) or occasionally using her husband’s surname, Daigle, is an American softball player who pitches for the USA national softball team and the Chicago Bandits. Finch helped lead Team USA to win the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics and a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Time magazine described her as the most famous softball player in history. On July 20, 2010 Finch officially announced her retirement from softball to focus on her family.

Early years: Jennie Finch has been playing softball since she was five years old and has been pitching since she was eight. Growing up, Finch was a bat girl for the University of California, Los Angeles. At La Mirada High School, Finch lettered four times in softball and twice each in both basketball and volleyball. As a senior, she was the captain of all three sports. As a sophomore, she was an All-California Interscholastic Federation Division II choice in softball and an All-Suburban League selection. Her father, Doug Finch, was her first pitching coach.

College: Finch played softball for the University of Arizona, where she was a three-time All-American pitcher, first-baseman and a two-time winner of the Honda Award for the Player of the Year.

In 2002, Finch set a new National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) record by pitching her 51st consecutive victory. She ended up with 60 consecutive wins breaking the previous record of 50 was set by Florida State’s Rebecca Aase in 1993. Finch’s streak spanned nearly two seasons and included three straight wins in the 2001 College World Series where she won Most Outstanding Player honors. A near-capacity crowd filled Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium and chants of “Jennie” echoed throughout the crowd in the 6-0 victory over Cal State Northridge. Said Finch, “It’s significant and it’s nice. But it doesn’t even come close to the team goal of winning a national championship.”

Finch recorded 24 wins in her freshman season; 29 wins in her sophomore season; 32 wins (and no losses, which set an NCAA record) in her junior season; and 34 wins in her senior season. She amassed a career total of 119 victories , 12th-most at the time.

Ines Sainz News: ”It’s time to move on from the Ines Sainz saga”

It was a good week for caveman football in more than one area, actually. How Ines Sainz became the standard-bearer for female journalists in the locker room, I’ll never know. But the TV Azteca reporter has become just that after claiming to be harassed by some New York Jets players and coaches last week. Here’s the short version: Sainz, wearing what could only be described as attention-grabbing and shrink-wrapped clothing, says she was granted extra and unwanted attention from several Jets, including a coach.

“It wasn’t crude, or foul-mouthed, or violent. But it was unprofessional.”

And presto, a volcano was born. Sainz has been on a rather disingenuous media tour, talking about how she doesn’t want attention; everyone else has been fighting over the propriety of women in the locker room. Here’s the thing: It’s settled. It’s done. Female journalists have fought through some damned humiliating treatment to gain access to equal rights, and anybody arguing against that right might as well try to build a time machine to return to the 1950s (or 1980s, on this issue).

“As for Sainz, yes, she should perhaps dress more appropriately for a work situation, but it’s not my job to tell her how to dress.”

“No, she doesn’t do fellow female journalists any favours by cooing and stroking biceps, but tell that to her boss.”

So yes, there are varying degrees of professionalism everywhere in sports media, and some of us should all do better. But the locker room is a workplace, and the Jets gave Inez Sainz a credential, and the onus remains primarily on athletes to act accordingly. Saying this is all Sainz’s fault / the initial treatment, not the post-traumatic parade / is a line of logic that is flimsier than any outfit Ines Sainz will ever wear.

Victoria Beckham in NYC

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Victoria Beckham was snapped leaving her Manhattan hotel today – she’s getting ready for NY Fashion Week, where she is set to debut her 2011 S/S collection on September 12th.

While we think the colour of Mrs Beckham’s Goat dress is fabu, we can’t help but feel this dress is a little snoozeville for the run up to NYFW. To add spice (geddit, “spice”? Har! Okay, soz) to this ensemble, we think VB should wear a statement necklace, such as this geometric Dicha ‘Bibi’ necklace.

Also, with Mrs B’s extensive (and highly covetable) shoe collection, we think she could have pulled out a pair of heels with more pizazz than these Brian Atwood basic nude pumps. Maybe she could try these Jimmy Choo ‘Mercury’ sandals on for size?

The Rooneys Issue A Statement

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Wayne and Coleen Ronney“The last six days have been extremely painful for us and our families. It is impossible for us, as it would be for any family, to attempt to resolve any issues in the current media glare and against the backdrop of so many inaccurate and intrusive stories.

We would therefore ask that the media now respect our privacy and the right of our family to discuss these matters in private.”

Wayne and Coleen Rooney

Since it’s way too close to the weekend for us to ask any question other than, “Where did we put our hip flasks?”, we’re just going to say that certainly is one carefully worded statement. We suggest reading between the lines…

Hang in there, Coleen – our thoughts are with you and your sister Rosie
