In January 2005, he joined Sevilla FC in a four 1/2-year deal, his La Liga debut arriving on the 29th, a 0–4 home loss against eventual champions FC Barcelona – the Andalusians did finish sixth and qualified for the UEFA Cup.

In the final of the latter edition, he opened the score against RCD Espanyol, in an eventual penalty shootout win; previously, in late September 2006, he had added a further five years to his link.

Barcelona: On 16 July 2010, Adriano signed a 4+1 deal with Barcelona, for €9.5 million plus a conditional fee of €4; it also included a buyout clause of €90 million. He was awarded the #21 shirt, vacated by Ukrainian Dmytro Chygrynskiy, departed after just one season

…soonnn…..

Totti has won several awards in Italy during his career including a record five Italian Footballer of the Year awards and two Serie A Footballer of the Year awards. He was named by Pelé as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004.

Totti is currently the top active Serie A goalscorer, and sixth all-time in league history with 192 goals.

International: Totti first came into international prominence while playing in the UEFA youth tournaments and won the UEFA under-21 championships in 1996. After starring with the Azzurrini in Italy’s Under-19 and Under-21 sides, he earned his first cap for Italy during a Euro 2000 qualifying victory against Switzerland on 10 October 1998.

Euro 2000: Italy went to Euro 2000 with Totti and he was in excellent form. He scored 2 goals during the tournament. The first goal against co-host nation Belgium in the first round and the second goal against Romania in the quarter-finals. Though Italy lost to France in the final, Totti was named the man of the match and he was selected for the 22-man Team of the Tournament.

2002 World Cup: Disappointment followed at the 2002 World Cup, with Totti failing to make a significant impact and then being sent off during Italy’s second-round loss to South Korea after being handed a controversial second yellow card by Byron Moreno for an alleged dive in the penalty area.

Euro 2004: Totti acquired a measure of infamy at Euro 2004 after he spat at Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen in a goalless draw on 14 June 2004. He was subsequently banned until the semifinals, but never made it back to action and finished the competition scoreless due to Italy’s elimination in the first round.

2006 World Cup: Though Totti recovered in time to join the national team for the 2006 World Cup, he was not completely in game shape after three months on the sidelines following his injury against Empoli, and played with metal plates in his ankle that had yet to be removed. He nonetheless was a regular fixture in the Marcello Lippi’s side. During the tournament he played behind the lone striker Luca Toni rather than as a pairing, notably scoring the controversial goal via a penalty in Italy’s 1–0 win over Australia on 26 June, and starting in the final against France until being substituted in the 61st minute. Italy went on to win the World Cup, and Totti was selected for the 23-man All-Star Team.

Retirement: Totti intended to retire from the Azzurri after the end of the World Cup, but reneged on his decision and remained undecided on his future for over a year and was never called up in the meantime. He made his retirement official on 20 July 2007, at the beginning of the 2007–08 Serie A season in order to focus solely on club play with Roma. The current Italy coach, Roberto Donadoni, attempted to get Totti to change his mind for the remaining Euro 2008 qualifiers but was not successful.

After the national team reunited with Marcello Lippi, Totti announced that he would like to play in the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa if he got called up, however, no official statement release from both Totti and Lippi about possible comeback. In the event, Totti was not named in the final squad, and Italy was subsequently eliminated as a bottom place in their group, their worst ever group stage results in the history of the World Cup. Diego Maradona and former national teammates Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluigi Buffon commented one of the reasons for Italy’s early exit is that the Azzurri lack creative players like Totti.

Luis Suarez Biography

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz (born 24 January 1987 in Salto) is a Uruguayan footballer who currently plays as a striker for AFC Ajax, where he is captain, and for the Uruguayan national team.

Suárez grew up alongside seven brothers, with a single mother. He was a troublesome teenager, involved in drinking and partying, instead of focusing on football. At the age of 14, however, he was given an ultimatum by his youth team coach, and started to work hard in practice.

Full name: Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz
Date of birth: 24 January 1987
Place of birth: Salto, Uruguay
Height: 1.81 m
Playing position: Striker
Club career: Nacional / Groningen / Ajax

Suárez began his career at Nacional. He moved to Groningen in 2006, before transfering to Ajax in 2007. At Ajax he mainly played as a supporting striker with the main striker initially being Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and later Marko Pantelić. Following the arrival of manager Martin Jol at Ajax in 2009, Suárez was made the club captain following the departure of Thomas Vermaelen. In 2010, Suárez was named Dutch Footballer of the Year, having ended the season as top scorer in the league with 35 goals (49 goals in all competitions).

2010 FIFA World Cup: On 2 July 2010, during the quarter final match against Ghana, Suárez intentionally handled the ball on the line in the last minute of extra-time and denied Ghana a goal that would have won them the game.He was subsequently given a direct red card and sent off the field. The resulting penalty was however missed by Asamoah Gyan and Uruguay went on to win 4–2 in the shootout and progress to the semi-final. His subsequent boasting about manipulating the rules of the game to keep Ghana out of a semi-final appearance has made him seem to be an international villain to some partisans. He was quoted saying “I think I made the best save of the tournament” and was seen cheering when Gyan’s penalty hit the crossbar.Due to this, he was audibly booed by members of the crowd each time he touched the ball in his next appearance, the 3rd place game of the World Cup 2010 against Germany. However, some football commentators point out that because Suarez intentionally committed an illegal act to deny the opposing team an obvious goal, he compromised the sporting integrity of the match itself, thereby cheating the game of football.Others have explained the booing as mainly a reaction to the elevation to hero status of Suarez by Uruguay’s fans.

Diego Forlán Biography

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Diego Forlán Biography, Video, Profile: Diego Martín Forlán Corazo (born 19 May 1979 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan footballer…

Forlán was born into a family of footballers, his father Pablo having played for Uruguay in the 1966 and 1974 FIFA World Cups and his grandfather, Juan Carlos Corazo, for Independiente in Argentina. Forlán joined Independiente after rising through their youth team, and after a successful four year spell signed for Manchester United. Forlán’s two-year stint in the Premier League saw him fail to achieve the form he held at Independiente, and he was signed by La Liga side Villarreal.

In his first season in Spanish football, Forlán scored 25 league goals and won the Pichichi Trophy. After two more successful seasons with Villarreal, Forlán joined Atlético Madrid, where he once again became the league’s top scorer, and became the first player to win the Pichichi Trophy twice since Ronaldo achieved this feat in 2003-04.

Forlán also has a successful international career, in which he has scored 28 times for his country. He has scored at both the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, in which he scored twice against the host nation, once against Ghana and once against the Netherlands in the semi-final. Diego Forlán Biography
Diego Forlán Biography

Club career: Forlán, son of former player and Uruguayan international Pablo Forlán, was a promising tennis player in his youth, but he decided to follow the family tradition and concentrate on football when his sister Alejandra was involved in a car accident, which killed her boyfriend and left her in intensive care for five months. He played for several South American clubs, including Argentine side Independiente, where he made his name in football as a goalscorer, before attracting European attention and transferring in January 2002 to play for Manchester United in England for a fee of £6.9 million.

Manchester United: Diego Forlán endured a difficult time at Manchester United. Although he made his debut for the club on 29 January against Bolton Wanderers, he did not score his first goal until 18 September, a penalty in a Champions League game against Maccabi Haifa. This goal drought, which lasted for 27 games during an eight month period, saw him dubbed “Diego Forlorn” and “Diego Birtles” (after Garry Birtles, a former United striker who had flopped) by some quarters of the English press.

Forlán enjoyed the occasional purple patch of scoring, though. He was noted for scoring important goals, such as the late equaliser at home to Aston Villa and the remarkable volleyed winner in the last minutes of the home game against Chelsea during United’s Premiership-winning season of 2002–03, and he became a fan favourite when he scored two goals against Liverpool in a 2–1 victory at Anfield. During this period, Forlán became known for removing his shirt and baring his torso in celebration of his goals. The first such example of this resulted in quite an amusing incident: Forlán whipped his shirt off in excitement after scoring an 85th minute winner against Southampton in November 2002 but struggled to get it back on in time for the re-start of play, resulting in the spectacle of Forlán briefly running around the Old Trafford pitch bare-chested, with his shirt still in his hand, then recovering the ball for his team. The referee soon stopped play and ordered Forlán off the pitch to get dressed.

Forlán’s record of 17 goals from 95 appearances for the club does not compare favourably to his former teammate Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 150 goals in 210 games, and it was widely thought that he would not start the 2004–05 season in the Red Devils’ team colours. That eventually proved true after signing for Villareal in August of 2004, the same month Manchester United signed Wayne Rooney.

Villareal CF: Forlán was strongly linked to a move to Spanish club Levante UD, but signed on 21 August 2004 with another Spanish club, Villarreal CF, where he became the Spanish 2004–05 season Pichichi Trophy winner with 25 goals, helping Villareal to their first ever UEFA Champions League spot. He also jointly won the European Golden Boot award with Thierry Henry. His form dipped in the 2005-06 season as Villareal underwent several changes, but in 2006-07 he began to hit form again, and ended the season high in the scoring charts again.

Atlético Madrid: Forlán was linked to transfer with Juan Román Riquelme to Atlético Madrid in exchange for Luis Perea and money in June 2007. On 30 June 2007, following the departure of their captain Fernando Torres to Liverpool, Atlético Madrid confirmed that they had agreed a fee of around €21 million. He returned to England in February 2008 to take part in Atlético’s UEFA Cup clash against Bolton Wanderers (the club against whom he made his Manchester United debut), but the side lost out 1–0 on aggregate. For the 2008–09 season, he was once again the recipient of the La Liga Pichichi Trophy award, with 32 goals in 33 matches, as well as the European Golden Boot for a second time.

On 22 April 2010, Forlán scored the only goal of the game in Atlético’s Europa League semi-final first leg at home to Liverpool. A week later, Liverpool took the tie to extra time before taking a 2–1 aggregate lead. Forlán then scored again to make it 2–2 on aggregate, giving Atlético the away goal they needed to reach the final, in which they played against Fulham at Hamburg’s HSH Nordbank Arena on 12 May. Forlán scored twice against Fulham in the Final, in a 2–1 win.

2010 FIFA World Cup: On 16 June 2010, during Uruguay’s second group game in the 2010 FIFA World Cup against South Africa, Forlán opened the scoring with a long range effort. Later on in the game Forlán scored from the penalty spot for his second and also had a hand in Uruguay’s third, ending in a 3-0 win over the host nation. On 2 July 2010, Forlán scored a free kick against Ghana to equalise during the quarter-finals. The game ended 1-1 and Uruguay advanced through to the semi-finals after defeating Ghana 4-2 in the penalty shootout. On 6 July 2010, Forlán scored another long range goal, this time with his left foot to equalise againt the Netherlands in the semi-final. Despite a half-time score at 1-1, Uruguay eventually lost 3-2 as the Dutch advanced to the final. Forlán became the first player since Lothar Matthäus in 1990 to score three goals outside the penalty area in one tournament
