He has recently signed for Leeds United, and has played 17 games for the Denmark under-21 national team. He joined Leeds United on 1 July 2010.

Schmeichel began his career with Manchester City, for whom his father, Peter Schmeichel, was playing at the time, but he had loan spells with Darlington, Bury and Falkirk before he made his City debut. Although Schmeichel appeared to have made the City #1 jersey his own at the start of the 2007–08 season, the emergence of Joe Hart resulted in Schmeichel being loaned to Cardiff City. He expressed an interest in remaining with Cardiff, but the departure of Andreas Isaksson meant that Schmeichel was recalled from his loan spell. The signing of Republic of Ireland international Shay Given in January 2009 meant that Schmeichel fell even further down the pecking order at City, and in August 2009, he was allowed to link up with former manager Sven-Göran Eriksson at Notts County.

Personal life: Schmeichel is the son of former Denmark international and Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who finished his career with Manchester City. Schmeichel is also cousin of ex England Under 17 Stephen Schmeichel-Jarreau. Kasper spent most of his childhood living in England, due to his father’s playing career, and speaks with an English accent. He attended Hulme Hall school in Cheadle. When Alex Bruce joined Kasper at Leeds United, the move saw the two players re-unite after both previously played football together on the streets as children after school.

Biography

Stipe Pletikosa (born 8 January 1979 in Split) is a Croatian football goalkeeper who plays for Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur on loan from Spartak Moscow. He also plays for the Croatian national team, for whom he made 80 appearances.

Pletikosa made his Croatia debut as a 20-year-old against Denmark in 1999, winning plaudits for his cat-like reflexes and shot-stopping. But insecurity over the handling of high balls took a heavy toll at the 2000 European under-21 championship in Slovakia, where Croatia finished last in their group after Pletikosa conceded some soft goals.

Pletikosa worked hard on improving the weaknesses in his game and under former Croatia coach Mirko Jozić, he became his country’s first-choice goalkeeper, playing in all three matches at the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals. The once nervous though talented Pletikosa has blossomed, making full use of every centimetre of his 1.93-metre frame and possessing a far greater assurance when dealing with difficult high balls.

He was also supposed to be Croatia’s first goalkeeper at the UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal, but sustained an injury a few days before the beginning of the tournament and the position of the team’s first goalkeeper was taken by Tomislav Butina, who was up to that time his first reserve. Butina retained the position in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying, so Pletikosa appeared in only two qualifying matches. Nevertheless, when the finals tournament started, Pletikosa was chosen over Butina, who had still been recovering from an injury sustained early in the year.

At UEFA Euro 2008, he was named Man of the Match in Croatia’s opening victory against Austria, in which he made many saves to help his side to hang on to a very narrow victory after the Austrians began to completely dominate the Croatian outfit after the first, and only, penalty goal.

On 16 June 2008, during the UEFA Euro 2008 match between Austria and Germany, BBC pundit Alan Hansen stated his belief that Pletikosa had been “the best goalkeeper in the (UEFA Euro 2008) tournament” thus far, ahead of more established ‘keepers like Petr Čech, Gianluigi Buffon and Iker Casillas, although his colleague Alan Shearer said that Edwin van der Sar had been equally impressive. However, despite these comments, Pletikosa was not highlighted as the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Those honours went to Buffon, Casillas and van der Sar, who were the three goalkeepers named in the Team of the Tournament.

On 31 August 2010, he signed a season-long loan with Tottenham Hotspur of the Premier League.

Biography

The goalkeeper joined us from Sunderland at the age of 20 in January, 2007.

Ben finally made his Spurs first team debut in our Carling Cup semi-final second leg with Burnley at Turf Moor on January 21, 2009, as we booked our place at Wembley for the second season in a row.

During the 2009/10 season, Ben was a valuable understudy to regular number one Heurelho Gomes for the majority of the campaign, before making his first Premier League appearance for the Club on the final day, once again at Burnley.

This followed an early season loan spell at League One Norwich City, where he made six appearances.

He came through the ranks at Sunderland, making his debut in the Championship against Leicester City aged just 18 in April, 2005, going on to make 22 appearances for the Black Cats.

An England youth regular, Ben had been part of the Under-21 squad for the best part of two years and made his debut as a substitute against Romania in August, 2007

Ben has also enjoyed spells with Luton Town, Leicester City and Carlisle United during his time with us.

Benjamin Robert “Ben” Alnwick (born 1 January 1987) is an English footballer who currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur as a goalkeeper. He has also been capped at under-16 and under-18 level for England. His younger brother Jak, who is also a goalkeeper, was at the Prudhoe local youth clubs and the Sunderland youth academy but joined North East rivals Newcastle United as a first year scholar in 2008.

Club career

Sunderland: Alnwick was born in the small Northumberland town of Prudhoe. He spent his boyhood years playing for the Prudhoe youth side. He started his professional career at Sunderland, and came to prominence at the climax of their 2004–05 Football League Championship-winning season, replacing the injured Thomas Myhre for Sunderland’s last three games. His performances against Leicester City and West Ham United, the games that won Sunderland promotion to the Premier League and Championship win respectively, were impressive. In November 2005, he spent a stint as the number one goalkeeper at Sunderland, replacing Kelvin Davis. Despite impressing, particularly in Sunderland’s 3–2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur where he made a penalty save from Robbie Keane Alnwick was dropped in favour of Kelvin Davis. After the departure of Davis to Southampton, Alnwick was given the number one shirt for the 2006–07 season.

After a disappointing start to the season 2006–07 season, Alnwick was relegated to the substitutes bench in favour of Darren Ward by new boss Roy Keane.

Tottenham Hotspur: Just two days after the January 2007 transfer window had opened, Alnwick joined Tottenham Hotspur for £900,000 in a deal that could rise to £1.3m and saw Márton Fülöp going the other way for £500,000. In September 2007 he was loaned to League One side Luton Town on a three-month loan deal. He was recalled from Luton in October, due to an injury to Paul Robinson. However, on Monday 7 January 2008, Alnwick joined Leicester City on loan until the end of the season.

Alnwick made his league debut in an M69 Derby on 12 January, keeping a clean sheet as Leicester won 2–0 at the Walkers Stadium. He kept four clean sheets in eight league games, conceding six goals before suffering a thigh injury as Leicester were relegated from the Championship.

On 16 October 2008, Alnwick joined League One side Carlisle United on an initial one month loan deal[8] and was recalled by Tottenham after the one month loan ended to become another serious option for the first team goal-keeper position. Alnwick made his debut for Tottenham in a Football League Cup semi-final second leg against Burnley, which ended in a 3–2 loss, although Tottenham won 6–4 on aggregate.

In July 2009, he signed on loan at Norwich City for three months. Alnwick made his debut in the 4–0 win over Yeovil Town and kept a clean sheet. He returned to Spurs on 5 September after picking up a hip injury that was expected to keep him out for six weeks.

International career: Alnwick received his first call-up to the England under-21 squad ahead of the 15 August 2006 match against Moldova. Still awaiting his debut, Alnwick was named in Stuart Pearce’s first squad as England under-21 coach, alongside another uncapped goalkeeper, Joe Hart. He was not chosen to start the match, on 6 February 2007, against Spain.

Alnwick was named in the first England U21 squad to play at the new Wembley against Italy U21s on 24 March 2007, but he remained an unused sub. He was also named in England’s squad for the U21 European Championships in the Netherlands. He debuted a year after his first call-up, in a friendly against Romania at Ashton Gate. He came on for the second half as a substitute for Joe Hart, and kept a clean sheet.

Biography

Italian goalkeeper with a decade of Premier League experience joined us from Chelsea in January, 2009.

In November, 2009, Carlo sustained injuries to his wrists and pelvis in a road accident, cutting his season short.

But by the end of the 2009-10 campaign, he had returned to training and was awarded a new one-year contract at the Club.

Carlo then made his return to match action in a pre-season friendly at Bournemouth in July, 2010.

The former AC Milan stopper had previously made eight first team appearances in the early part of the 2009-10 season, deputising for injured regular number one Heurelho Gomes.

Having arrived at the Lane during the previous January transfer window, Carlo went straight into Harry Redknapp’s starting lineup for our 3-1 Premier League victory at home to Stoke City the day after he joined.

He then retained his place between the sticks for our following three Premier League games before Gomes reclaimed the No.1 jersey for the remainder of the 2008-09 season.

Carlo previously served at Stamford Bridge for almost ten years, making 210 appearances and is second behind Peter Bonetti in Chelsea’s all-time list of clean sheets.

He was number one between 2002-04 before playing understudy to Petr Cech, widely regarded as the world’s best goalkeeper.

Earlier in his career, Carlo had spells at Italian giants AC Milan, where his father Fabio played, and Lazio.

Carlo Cudicini (born 6 September 1973 in Milan) is an Italian goalkeeper who currently plays for English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. He is the son of former AC Milan goalkeeper Fabio Cudicini and grandson of Circolo Sportivo Ponziana 1912 defender Guglielmo Cudicini.

Club career

Chelsea: 1999–2003

Despite a brief challenge from Mark Bosnich, Cudicini took over from Ed de Goey almost instantly, and retained his first team place with a string of excellent performances.

He was voted Chelsea’s Player of the Year for the 2001–02 season by fans, reflecting the value he added to a team struggling for consistency.

Cudicini was recognised as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League in the 2002–2003 season, when he won the ITV “Golden Gloves” Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season award.

After a bright start to the 2003–04 season, the old injury problems experienced in his Lazio days came back, leaving him unable to carry on his success from last season and unable to play for a large portion of the season. His value to the team was highlighted when Chelsea’s replacement goalkeeper Marco Ambrosio failed to effectively fit into the first team, leading to Chelsea’s exit from the Champions League at the semi final stage to AS Monaco.

2008–2009

Cudicini made his first Premier League appearance of the season in Chelsea’s 5–0 win at Middlesbrough and this marked his 100th clean sheet in a Chelsea shirt. He played his last game for Chelsea at home in the FA Cup 3rd Round tie with Southend United which ended in a 1–1 draw.

Tottenham Hotspur: 2008–2009

On 26 January 2009, it was confirmed that Cudicini signed for Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer. He was allowed to move on a free due to his services given to Chelsea. He made his debut for ‘Spurs on 27 January 2009 in the Premier League fixture against Stoke City, the match ended in a 3–1 win. Since Tottenham’s loss in the Carling Cup final against Manchester United, Cudicini’s appearances have been limited. He did not play again for Spurs in the 2008–2009 season after the 2–1 victory over Hull City at the KC stadium a week before the Carling Cup final.

2009–2010

Cudicini made his first competitive appearance in nearly six months for Tottenham when he came on as a substitute for the injured Heurelho Gomes in a 5–1 victory over Hull City on 19 August 2009. He played a number of matches, including a 3–0 defeat at his former club Chelsea on 20 September 2009 which saw him return to Stamford Bridge for the first time since leaving the club. He was then benched in favour of the returning Gomes for the match against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

On 12 November 2009, Cudicini was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in Walthamstow, east London on his way to Tottenham’s training ground. It was reported that he had fractured both his wrists and injured his pelvis. He was taken to an east London hospital then later was transferred to a private hospital. In late February, the Tottenham Hotspur website reported that Cudicini had started some ball work.

On 12 May 2010, Cudicini was handed a new one year contract with Spurs. On the 10th July 2010, Carlo played 45 minutes in a pre-season friendly against Bournemouth. This was the first action Cudicini had played since the accident.

On 25 August 2010, Cudicini saw his first official action for the club in nearly a year as a half-time replacement for the injured Gomes in a UEFA Champions’ League Qualifier against Young Boys of Switzerland. Three days later he started against Wigan Athletic in the Premiership at White Hart Lane but was criticised for the Latics’ winning goal scored by Hugo Rodallega.

International career

Cudicini has been capped at Under-18 and Under-21 level, but has yet to appear for his country of birth. He was called into the squad for the 2002 friendly against Turkey but was not named in the matchday squad, behind Gianluigi Buffon and Francesco Toldo, and thus remains potentially eligible to represent any of the British nations – England, Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales.

As a result of his fine form, Gomes earned his first call-up to the Brazilian national squad for the first time in nearly three years in May 2009.

He carried this form into his second season at the Lane, despite suffering an early season groin injury.

After regaining the number one jersey once fit again, Gomes continued to dismay opponents and fans alike with seemingly impossible saves, making him a cult hero among Spurs supporters.

He made 42 appearances in total during his second season, and by the end of it was widely regargded as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

In May, 2010, Gomes was called up to the Brazil squad for the summer’s World Cup Finals in South Africa.

Gomes has a routine before kick-off in each half where he leaps above the crossbar on each side of the goal repeatedly, while fans behind the goal cheer him on.

Born in Minas Gerais, he arrived at White Hart Lane having won four Dutch titles in succession with PSV, reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2004-05.

Gomes made his name at Cruzeiro in Brazil, debuting in 2002 before securing his move to Holland in 2004.

Other Bio

Heurelho da Silva Gomes (born 15 February 1981 in João Pinheiro, Minas Gerais), commonly known as Heurelho Gomes or just Gomes, is a Brazilian goalkeeper, who currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur. He previously made a name for himself at Dutch club PSV.

Club career

Cruzeiro: Gomes started his career in his native country Brazil at Cruzeiro, where he played 59 games between 2001 and 2004. Here, he was scouted by Piet de Visser and in July 2004, he was sold to PSV.
PSV: He made his debut for the Eindhoven club against Red Star Belgrade on 11 August of that year.

At first, there were critics, saying that Brazilians ‘should be on the field, not in the goal’. In other words, there were doubts if Gomes was reliable enough. Those doubts were quickly erased. Even though he conceded two goals in his debut against RBC, which PSV won 5–2, he proved himself to be a reliable goalkeeper. He played a major part in PSV’s four latest consecutive titles in the Eredivisie and in the great European achievements. In his first season, PSV immediately reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where in the 14 attempts before, PSV wasn’t able to reach the second round. In the following seasons, PSV progressed each time from the group stage.

In the Eredivisie, Gomes was known for his outstanding reflexes, which saved points for PSV more than once. Also his trademark throwing ability is well known. Gomes is able to throw the ball all the way deep into the opponents half. Also before the start of the match and second half, Gomes jumps up above the goal with his shoulders, pumping up the PSV supporters.

Before his transfer to Tottenham, Gomes was a crowd favorite at PSV. He can speak Portuguese and Spanish and while in Holland, he picked up a fair amount of Dutch, although it has to be said he is not fluent in the language.
Gomes celebrates winning the 2007–08 Dutch championship with PSV.

Even though the rivalry between PSV, Feyenoord and Ajax is intense, fans from rival clubs showed sympathy for the Brazilian.

Notable was an incident in Rotterdam in the match against Feyenoord, when Gomes injured himself whilst celebrating a goal, scored by his teammate Phillip Cocu. However, he managed to continue and even managed to pull off a wonder save, keeping his side in the game, which they went on to draw.

Notable achievements: Gomes achieved a great amount while at PSV. He has the record for highest percentage of clean sheets in the Eredivisie, with him keeping a clean sheet in 60% of his league games for PSV. He also scored a wonderful volleyed chip against Feyenoord which made him the first goalkeeper to score in the Eredivisie for 6 years. In his first season in Holland, Gomes went 16 hours and 11 minutes without conceding a goal. In the same season, Gomes went on another run without conceding any goals, this time he didn’t concede a goal in 817 minutes. In his third season, 2006–07, he had again a notable streak. Gomes didn’t concede in 956 minutes, which eventually played a huge part in PSV’s surprise capture of the championship title. PSV won the 2006–07 title, after having the same amount of points as Ajax, but PSV finished first due to a better goal difference (+50, against +49 for Ajax). Even though those were very impressive stints, it wasn’t enough to break the record of Heinz Stuy, who set the record in 1971 with 1082 minutes. Gomes did set a record, though, when in the 2007–08 season he kept a clean sheet in his first 5 games.

Criticism of the board and chairman of PSV: Gomes stated in several media that he wouldn’t mind staying at PSV until the end of his career. In December 2007, however, Gomes stated in the Dutch magazine Voetbal International that he had lost trust in PSV. He also criticized the trainer situation. Ronald Koeman, who went to Valencia, was replaced by Jan Wouters, who stepped aside for Sef Vergoossen in January 2008. He in turn was replaced by Huub Stevens in the summer of 2008. In addition, Gomes criticized the way Vergoossen had treated youngster Ismaïl Aissati, saying that Vergoossen was too hard on the young midfielder and that he didn’t get the trust that he needs. The conflict started when Gomes could have signed a contract until 2011, but the offer was withdrawn when the Brazilian was about to sign.

Tottenham Hotspur: Following appointment of manager Juande Ramos, Gomes signed for Tottenham Hotspur on 27 June 2008 for a fee was believed to be around £7.8 million. Gomes played his first game in Tottenham Hotspur colours in a pre-season friendly match on 19 July 2008 against Segunda División B side Dénia, which Tottenham won 4–2.

Gomes eventually obtained a work permit to play in the United Kingdom, despite playing less than the 75% required amount of games for Brazil in the last 2 years.

Gomes made his home debut on the 10 August 2008, keeping a clean sheet with a 5–0 victory over Roma on Tottenham’s last pre-season friendly, before the English Premiership campaign 2008–09.

Gomes didn’t have the best start to life in the Premier League, as Tottenham lost the first two opening games 2–1 to Middlesbrough and Sunderland respectively, but his commanding presence in goal helped Spurs earn their first point of the season with a draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. However, his reputation took a hit a week later when he “inexplicably let Ashley Young’s weak 54th-minute shot slip under his body” in Spurs’ 2–1 home defeat against Aston Villa. These blunders continued as he conceded an own goal against Fulham on 15 November 2008, which kept his club mired deep in the relegation zone and also caused Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeping coach Hans Leitert to be sacked on 19 November 2008, with the appointment of former Spurs Goalkeeper Tony Parks made shortly after. He went on to put in a brilliant performance against West Ham United, saving two important shots deep into the match in which Tottenham won 2–0, before earning praise from Harry Redknapp with two world class saves to deny Park Ji-Sung and Ryan Giggs in a 0–0 draw with Manchester United.

Gomes was injured in spurs’ 5–1 win over Hull City in the second game of the 2009-10 Premier League season and had to be replaced by second-choice keeper Carlo Cudicini. After an MRI Scan it was revealed that Gomes suffered damage to his groin which would keep him out for up to a month. Gomes made his return to first team action in the 5–1 victory over Preston in the Carling Cup on 23rd September 2009, and made his Premier League comeback in the 2–1 win at Portsmouth on 17th October. During this match the Brazilian made a handful of brilliant saves, one of which was compared by former spurs ‘keeper Pat Jennings to a famous save made by Gordon Banks against Brazil in the 1970 World Cup. On the 3rd April 2010, he made two penalty saves out of three against Darren Bent in a 3–1 defeat away at Sunderland. On the 14th April 2010, Gomes’ fine form aided Spurs in picking up their first League victory over Arsenal in 21 meetings. He saved a Robin Van Persie free kick and several other attempts on goal in succession. The following week, on 17 April 2010, Gomes again made several crucial saves as Tottenham beat Chelsea 2–1 as the team passed Manchester City to become fourth in the standings. He kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Bolton and then he played a vital role in the 1-0 victory against Manchester City with two world class saves which saw Tottenham get into the Champions League for the first time ever.

International career: Gomes made his debut for Brazil in 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Although the competition is for senior national teams, Brazil chose to send an Under-23 squad to the competition. Gomes made 5 appearances as Brazil went to the final and finished second after being beaten by Mexico 1–0.

Despite being part of the Brazilian squad that won the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup as the third-choice keeper behind Dida and Marcos, Gomes did not receive any playing time. He was also excluded from then coach Carlos Alberto Parreira’s final 23-man roster for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

It wasn’t until his inclusion on the team for a series of late-summer friendlies, as a consequence of new Brazil coach Dunga’s desire to play many of the Seleção’s younger stars, that Gomes has finally gained some consistent playing time in goal. On 14 August 2006, he was called up for a friendly against Norway, which ended in a 1–1 draw. On 3 September 2006, he played in Brazil’s 3–0 win over rivals Argentina at Emirates Stadium in England. Two days later, Gomes kept a second consecutive clean sheet in a 2–0 victory over Wales at White Hart Lane. His latest stint between the sticks was during a 2–1 win over Ecuador on 10 October 2006.

On 11 May 2010, it was announced that Gomes would be part of the Brazilian squad which would compete at the World Cup in South Africa. Gomes made a rare appearance for Brazil in a World Cup warm-up game, replacing Brazil’s number one keeper Júlio César Soares Espíndola as a substitute.

Club – Schalke 04

Neuer signed professional terms in 2005 after progressing through every age group at his hometown club. He made his Bundesliga debut when he came on to substitute the injured Frank Rost on match day 2 of the 2006–07 season. The 20-year-old eventually won the starting position when Rost was surprisingly dropped for the crunch clash against Bayern Munich. He did not disappoint and managed to secure a 2–2 draw against the defending champions. Despite his young age, he was widely tipped to be a potential successor to his former idol Jens Lehmann in the future for the Germany national team.

On 5 March 2008, in the first knockout round of the UEFA Champions League, Neuer performed fantastically against FC Porto where he almost single-handedly kept Schalke in the game with some brilliant saves and forced the game into penalties. He later saved penalties from Bruno Alves and Lisandro Lopez to help Schalke advance to the quarter finals. For his heroics, he was shortlisted for the 2007–08 UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year award and was the youngest and the only Bundesliga goalkeeper on the list.He was one of only three Bundesliga players to play every single minute in the 2007–08 season.

The 2008–09 was somewhat disappointing as Schalke finished eighth in the league table and missed out on a Europe League spot. However, his good showing at the 2009 U-21 European Championships sparked interest from Bayern Munich, with Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge declaring interest in signing the young goalkeeper. Schalke’s new manager Felix Magath, however, insisted that Neuer “will play for Schalke next season”.In November, he was the only German goalkeeper in the list of 5 nominated goalkeepers for the UEFA Team of the Year.
