The deal has been one of the most protracted of the transfer window so far, and has been marked by controversy after the player criticised Spurs chairman Daniel Levy on a social networking website for, he felt, holding up the deal.
The Black Cats’ official website also confirms that the player has signed a four-year deal, and moves for a fee of £10 million, a new record fee for Sunderland, eclipsing the £9 million paid by Roy Keane for Scotland international goalkeeper Craig Gordon.
Bent was Spurs top scorer last season, and netted 25 goals from 43 starts and 36 substitute appearances in total for the north London side. Despite that record, the arrival of Peter Crouch at White Hart Lane spelled the end of his Spurs career, and he will be relieved to have clinched the move to Sunderland after a further eight hours of negotiation today.
