Ines Sainz News: ”It’s time to move on from the Ines Sainz saga”

It was a good week for caveman football in more than one area, actually. How Ines Sainz became the standard-bearer for female journalists in the locker room, I’ll never know. But the TV Azteca reporter has become just that after claiming to be harassed by some New York Jets players and coaches last week. Here’s the short version: Sainz, wearing what could only be described as attention-grabbing and shrink-wrapped clothing, says she was granted extra and unwanted attention from several Jets, including a coach.

“It wasn’t crude, or foul-mouthed, or violent. But it was unprofessional.”

And presto, a volcano was born. Sainz has been on a rather disingenuous media tour, talking about how she doesn’t want attention; everyone else has been fighting over the propriety of women in the locker room. Here’s the thing: It’s settled. It’s done. Female journalists have fought through some damned humiliating treatment to gain access to equal rights, and anybody arguing against that right might as well try to build a time machine to return to the 1950s (or 1980s, on this issue).

“As for Sainz, yes, she should perhaps dress more appropriately for a work situation, but it’s not my job to tell her how to dress.”

“No, she doesn’t do fellow female journalists any favours by cooing and stroking biceps, but tell that to her boss.”

So yes, there are varying degrees of professionalism everywhere in sports media, and some of us should all do better. But the locker room is a workplace, and the Jets gave Inez Sainz a credential, and the onus remains primarily on athletes to act accordingly. Saying this is all Sainz’s fault / the initial treatment, not the post-traumatic parade / is a line of logic that is flimsier than any outfit Ines Sainz will ever wear.

NFL sends message amid Sainz scandal

The NFL reminded all 32 teams Wednesday about the right way to treat women reporters, following complaints about the behavior of some New York Jets players.

Ines Sainz of Mexico’s TV Azteca was at a practice session Saturday doing a story on quarterback Mark Sanchez, and it is alleged one coach and various players tried to run at her and throw balls at her during a passing drill.

Players also allegedly made catcalls and hooting noises in the locker room towards her after practice.

Wednesday’s memo reaffirmed NFL policy: “By law, women must be granted the same rights to perform their jobs as men. Please remember that women reporters are professionals and should be treated as such.”

An earlier Jets statement said the team was working with the league “to gather the facts and take any appropriate steps necessary to maintain a respectful environment for the media.”

At the request of Jets brass, the Association of Women in Sports Media is hosting an “educational session” with the team in the next week because of the locker-room incident.

“If Jets players, coaches and staff … are found to have acted in unprofessional and harassing behavior toward Ms. Sainz, we expect and demand reprimand and punishment by the NFL and Jets,” the group said.

Sainz said Monday night that she considered the on-field antics “a joke, so I didn’t pay attention to it.” But she said she took the locker-room catcalls more seriously, noting, “I felt very uncomfortable.”

“Women should be treated professionally, and they deserve to be treated with respect,” she said.

Fox NFL Analyst Brian Baldinger: Ines Sainz Was ‘Asking For It’

More and more people are voicing their opinions on Ines Sainz, the female reporter who was allegedly harassed in the New York Jets locker room on Saturday.

Fox NFL analyst Brian Baldinger discussed the situation Thursday morning with Tony Bruno on 97.5 the Fanatic in Philadelphia.

The former NFL player said Sainz, who recently explained what happened on the day of the alleged incident, was “asking for it.”

“If you come into the NFL dressed the way that she is dressed you are just asking for it,” Baldinger said. “I think she brings it upon herself. I don’t know how you let her on a practice field (looking like that).”

Baldinger went onto say that Sainz’s outfit was not appropriate for the locker room.

“Listen, these are painted on jeans. She’s got a shirt that is just glued to her body,” he said. “If you want her to walk up there and do an interview with Mark Sanchez, put her in a room with Mark Sanchez. Don’t take her through the locker room.”
