Ines Sainz News: ”It’s time to move on from the Ines Sainz saga”
It was a good week for caveman football in more than one area, actually. How Ines Sainz became the standard-bearer for female journalists in the locker room, I’ll never know. But the TV Azteca reporter has become just that after claiming to be harassed by some New York Jets players and coaches last week. Here’s the short version: Sainz, wearing what could only be described as attention-grabbing and shrink-wrapped clothing, says she was granted extra and unwanted attention from several Jets, including a coach.
“It wasn’t crude, or foul-mouthed, or violent. But it was unprofessional.”
And presto, a volcano was born. Sainz has been on a rather disingenuous media tour, talking about how she doesn’t want attention; everyone else has been fighting over the propriety of women in the locker room. Here’s the thing: It’s settled. It’s done. Female journalists have fought through some damned humiliating treatment to gain access to equal rights, and anybody arguing against that right might as well try to build a time machine to return to the 1950s (or 1980s, on this issue).
“As for Sainz, yes, she should perhaps dress more appropriately for a work situation, but it’s not my job to tell her how to dress.”
“No, she doesn’t do fellow female journalists any favours by cooing and stroking biceps, but tell that to her boss.”
So yes, there are varying degrees of professionalism everywhere in sports media, and some of us should all do better. But the locker room is a workplace, and the Jets gave Inez Sainz a credential, and the onus remains primarily on athletes to act accordingly. Saying this is all Sainz’s fault / the initial treatment, not the post-traumatic parade / is a line of logic that is flimsier than any outfit Ines Sainz will ever wear.
