Biography

Italian goalkeeper with a decade of Premier League experience joined us from Chelsea in January, 2009.

In November, 2009, Carlo sustained injuries to his wrists and pelvis in a road accident, cutting his season short.

But by the end of the 2009-10 campaign, he had returned to training and was awarded a new one-year contract at the Club.

Carlo then made his return to match action in a pre-season friendly at Bournemouth in July, 2010.

The former AC Milan stopper had previously made eight first team appearances in the early part of the 2009-10 season, deputising for injured regular number one Heurelho Gomes.

Having arrived at the Lane during the previous January transfer window, Carlo went straight into Harry Redknapp’s starting lineup for our 3-1 Premier League victory at home to Stoke City the day after he joined.

He then retained his place between the sticks for our following three Premier League games before Gomes reclaimed the No.1 jersey for the remainder of the 2008-09 season.

Carlo previously served at Stamford Bridge for almost ten years, making 210 appearances and is second behind Peter Bonetti in Chelsea’s all-time list of clean sheets.

He was number one between 2002-04 before playing understudy to Petr Cech, widely regarded as the world’s best goalkeeper.

Earlier in his career, Carlo had spells at Italian giants AC Milan, where his father Fabio played, and Lazio.

Paolo Cesare Maldini (born 26 June 1968 in Milan, Italy) is a retired Italian footballer. He spent all 25 seasons of his career at Serie A club Milan, before retiring at the age of 40. During that period, Maldini won the UEFA Champions League a record five times, as well as seven Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia, five Supercoppa Italiana, five European Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup. He played for 14 years for the Italian national team, making his debut in 1988 before retiring in 2002 with 126 caps scoring 7 goals.

Maldini’s father, Cesare formerly played for and captained Milan and is a successful national U-21 coach.

Club Career: AC Milan (1978–1985)

International Career: In 1986, Maldini was called up by his father Cesare to the Italian U-21 side, where he earned twelve caps and scored five goals in two years. He made his Azzurri debut at the age of nineteen on 31 March 1988, in a 1–1 friendly draw against Yugoslavia, and made one appearance for Italy at the 1988 Olympics. Maldini featured in all four of Italy’s games at Euro 1988, and participated in his first World Cup in 1990, where Italy lost to Argentina in the semifinals on penalties.

Maldini’s first international goal came in his 44th career match, in a 2–0 friendly win over Mexico on 20 January 1993. He captained Italy at the start of the 1994 World Cup, losing to Brazil in the final on penalties. He was named in the Team of the Tournament, 32 years after his father received the same honor at the 1962 World Cup. Euro 1996 would see Italy eliminated in the group stage, and the quarterfinals of the 1998 World Cup. Italy did reach the final of Euro 2000, but lost to France in extra time.

After Italy were eliminated in the 2002 World Cup round of sixteen, Maldini retired trophyless from international competition as Italy’s most capped player. He scored seven international goals, all coming in home games. He spent over half of his 16 years as an international as team captain, wearing the armband a record 74 times.

In February 2009, Italian head coach Marcello Lippi declared his support for a testimonial match for Maldini, stating that it would give him a chance to play for the Azzurri for a final time. Italian Football Federation offered him a place in the line-up in a friendly match against Northern Ireland. However, Paolo Maldini rejected the offer, saying that he wanted to part with football in an “official” match.

Giuseppe Bergomi Biography

Giuseppe Bergomi (born 22 December 1963) is a former Italian footballer, who spent his entire career at Internazionale Milano. He currently holds the record of most appearances for the club, having enjoyed 19 seasons with the same team.

Francesco Toldo (born December 2, 1971) is an Italian footballer who plays for F.C. Internazionale Milano, as a goalkeeper.

Club Career: Born in Padua, Veneto, Toldo started his career with A.C. Milan; however, he never played a game with the club, being loaned twice during his link, successively to Hellas Verona, Trentino Calcio 1921 and Ravenna Calcio, before being released in the 1993 summer.

He then joined ACF Fiorentina, and became the Viola club’s starter for eight seasons, winning the Italian Cup twice, and playing in one edition of the UEFA Champions League. One year before Fiorentina faced bankruptcy, in 2001, Toldo transferred to F.C. Internazionale Milano, where he was the number one until the summer of 2005, when Brazilian Júlio César relegated him to the bench, after he had elected to sit out Inter’s summer friendly match tour of England.
