NFL Highlights (Week 14)

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Atlanta still boast the best record in the NFC after going 11-2 with a comprehensive demolition of the hapless Carolina Panthers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars look set to join them in the post-season after holding off the Oakland Raiders to get to 8-5.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers were given plenty of help by an error-strewn Washington display, as they held on for a 17-16 victory in the capital that keeps their play-off hopes very much alive.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17-16 Washington Redskins

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers stay on course for the play-offs at 8-5 after being almost gifted victory at Washington.

The Redskins (5-8) muffed an extra point attempt with nine seconds remaining that would have taken the game into overtime. Earlier, Graham Gano missed two short field goal attempts in an error-strewn game that summed up the Washington season.

The hosts led 10-3 at the break, completely dominating Tampa on the ground but managing only a one-yard touchdown reception from tight end Logan Paulsen and a scratchy 25-yarder from Gano that just crept inside the left unpright.

Tampa hit back in the second quarter and led 17-10 when Kellen Winslow went in on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Josh Freeman, and the quarterback crashed over for a two-point conversion.

But veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb led the ‘Skins on a long drive capped by Santana Moss’ six-yard touchdown, only for special teams to once again prove Washington’s undoing.

Oakland Raiders 31- 38 Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Oakland Raiders in a Florida shoot-out and at 8-5 look set to return to the play-offs.

David Garrard threw three touchdown passes and Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashad Jennings each rushed for more than 100 yards, as the Jaguars overcame a 10-point deficit to win for the fifth time in the last six games.

There were six scoring plays of at least 30 yards in the game, including three by Oakland’s Darren McFadden, but the Raiders drop to 6-7 after failing to build on last week’s emotional win at AFC West divisional rivals San Diego.

Jacksonville (8-5) will take the AFC East title if they win at Indianapolis next week.

Atlanta Falcons 31-10 Carolina Panthers

Michael Turner ran for 112 yards and three touchdowns and Matt Ryan threw for another, as the Atlanta Falcons maintained their grasp on the best record in the NFC with a comfortable victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The Falcons (11-2) cruised to their seventh straight win. John Abraham and Kroy Biermann each had two sacks, while Mike Peterson picked off Jimmy Clausen.

Jonathan Stewart rushed for a season-best 133 yards, but lost a fumble on Carolina’s first play from scrimmage to set up Atlanta’s first TD.

Falcons QB Ryan wasn’t particularly sharp, but completed 20 of 34 passes for 227 yards and an interception. Roddy White caught eight passes for 79 yards.

For the Panthers (1-12), Clausen was 14 of 24 for 107 yards, extending his streak to 193 passes since his lone TD of the season. Peterson picked him off midway through the fourth quarter off a deflected pass to set up Turner’s final TD. Clausen was also sacked five times.

Green Bay Packers 3-7 Detroit Lions

Detroit quarterback Drew Stanton threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Will Heller midway through the fourth quarter as the Lions snapped a five-game losing streak to a Packers team that lost Aaron Rodgers to injury.

Detroit (3-10) ended a 19-game skid against the NFC North, the NFL’s worst slump within a division since the merger four decades ago.

Green Bay (8-5) lost Rodgers and a game it desperately needed to win for play-off positioning. The star quarterback was knocked out in the second quarter with his second concussion this season.

Matt Flynn got Green Bay to the Detroit 31 before turning the ball over on downs with an incomplete pass into the end zone just past a diving Greg Jennings in the final minute.

Cleveland Browns 6-13 Buffalo Bills

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to David Nelson, while cornerback Leodis McKelvin made a late interception in helping secure Buffalo’s 13-6 win Sunday.

Rian Lindell hit two field goals, both from 19 yards, for the Bills (3-10), as the Browns (5-8) were eliminated from play-off contention.

Cleveland’s offense didn’t cross midfield in five second-half possessions as the Browns managed nine first downs and 187 total yards.

The Browns fumbled five times, losing two, while Jake Delhomme’s interception at midfield with under four minutes left turned out to be their final possession.

NFL Highlights

Monday, December 6th, 2010

The Pittsburgh Steelers produced a late comeback to take control of the AFC North with victory at the Baltimore Ravens.

Troy Polamalu forced a turnover that led to the clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Steelers escaped M&T Bank Stadium with a 13-10 success.

Elsewhere in the late games on Sunday, Atlanta held onto the NFC South lead with a come-from-behind success in Tampa Bay.

St Louis and Seattle remain locked at the top of the NFC West after respective wins, Peyton Manning had another day to forget as Indianapolis went down in overtime to Dallas, and Oakland beat San Diego for the second time this season.

St Louis Rams 19-6 Arizona Cardinals

Josh Brown kicked four field goals as the St Louis Rams maintained a share of the NFC West lead with a 19-6 triumph at the Arizona Cardinals.

Brown’s efforts – from 28, 52, 20 and 43 yards respectively – were supplemented by the only touchdown of the game, a 27-yard run from Stephen Jackson in the third quarter.

The Cardinals, who have now lost seven in a row, led 6-0 early on after a pair of Jay Feely field goals but failed to score a point thereafter.

The Rams and Seattle Seahawks are tied for first place in the NFC West with 6-6 records.

Oakland Raiders 28-13 San Diego Chargers

The Oakland Raiders completed the double over division rivals the San Diego Chargers with a 28-13 win at Qualcomm Stadium.

Darren McFadden and Michael Bush ran the show for the Raiders, finishing with 97 and 95 yards respectively on the ground and a touchdown apiece.

Both teams now have 6-6 records and sit two games back of AFC West leaders Kansas City.

Dallas Cowboys 38-35 Indianapolis Colts (OT)

Peyton Manning’s recent struggles continued as the reigning league MVP threw four interceptions in the Indianapolis Colts’ 38-35 overtime defeat at home to the Dallas Cowboys.

Two of Manning’s picks were returned for touchdowns and, despite a fourth quarter rally that saw the Colts come from 27-14 down to force overtime, they were eventually condemned to a 38-yard field goal from David Beuhler after Manning’s fourth interception had given the Cowboys field position.

The Colts have now lost three in a row and, at 6-6, are a game behind AFC South frontrunners Jacksonville.

Carolina Panthers 14-31 Seattle Seahawks

Marshawn Lynch scored three touchdowns as the Seattle Seahawks crushed the Carolina Panthers at QWest Field.

Lynch, who arrived in a mid-season trade from Buffalo, went in from close range twice in the third quarter and then sealed the Seahawks’ victory with a 22-yard effort with under five minutes remaining.

The running back’s heroics made up for a below-par display from quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who was intercepted twice.

The Panthers, whose 1-11 record is the worst in the NFL, actually led 14-3 at half-time thanks to rushing touchdowns from Mike Goodson and Jonathan Stewart.

Atlanta Falcons 28-24 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Matt Ryan once again came up big down the stretch as the Atlanta Falcons extended their winning streak to six games with a 28-24 success at NFC South foes the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Falcons trailed by 24-14 with just over 10 minutes remaining at Raymond James Stadium but Eric Weems returned a kick-off 102 yards for a touchdown and Ryan then engineered the match-winning score with less than five minutes left on the clock.

Ryan marshalled a 10-play, 67-yard drive culminating in a nine-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jenkins to complete his side’s comeback.

The Falcons are top of the NFC South at 10-2, one game ahead of the New Orleans Saints (9-3), with the 7-5 Buccaneers now likely to need a wild-card to make the play-offs.

Pittsburgh Steelers 13-10 Baltimore Ravens

The Pittsburgh Steelers moved clear at the top of the AFC North with a hard-fought success in Baltimore.

Troy Polamalu forced a fumble with a sack of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and the Steelers converted the turnover into a touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Isaac Redman with just under three minutes remaining to seal a 13-10 victory.

Pittsburgh trailed 10-3 entering the final quarter at M&T Bank Stadium, Flacco finding Anquan Boldin for an early touchdown before an exchange of field goals between Shaun Suisham and Billy Cundiff after half-time.

Suisham’s second field goal, a chip shot from 19 yards, reduced the visitors’ deficit to four points before Polamalu’s late intervention set-up the winning drive.

The Steelers are now 9-3 and hold sole possession of the AFC North lead over the 8-4 Ravens.

Ravens show their Steel – (NFL Highlights – Week 4)

Baltimore celebrate their last-gasp win in Pittsburgh

Baltimore Ravens inflicted a first defeat of the season on Pittsburgh Steelers, while St Louis Rams made it two wins from two on Sunday.

There was late drama in Atlanta as Matt Bryant fired over a field goal on the buzzer to sink San Francisco.

Another goal-kicker who grabbed the headlines was 46-year-old John Carney, who booted over three field goals to help New Orleans overcome Carolina.

Elsewhere, the Jets made it four wins from four, Cleveland edged out Cincinnati, Green Bay beat Detroit and Washington stunned Philadelphia.
San Francisco 49ers 14-16 Atlanta Falcons

Match-winner Bryant slotted over a 43-yard field goal just before the buzzer to hand the Falcons a comeback win against the 49ers.

Bryant scored the final nine points of the game as San Francisco relinquished a 14-0 lead to slump to 0-4 for the season.

A Vernon Davis touchdown and a Taylor Mays blocked punt that resulted in a touchdown had put the 49ers in control before the Falcons roared back.

Matt Ryan finished 26-of-43 for 273 yards, 104 of which went to Roddy White on his seven catches. Michael Turner was held to 50 yards on 16 carries for Atlanta, who have now won three in a row since losing to Pittsburgh in the season opener.

New York Jets 38-14 Buffalo Bills – (NFL Highlights)

The Jets reaffirmed their position at the top of AFC East with a comfortable victory over the Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Dustin Keller scored two touchdowns for the second consecutive week to ensure Buffalo are still searching for their first victory of the campaign.

LaDainian Tomlinson enjoyed his best game in nearly two years for the Jets, rushing for 133 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

The Bills conceded 30 points for the third straight game and are off to an 0-4 start for the third time since 2001.

Cincinnati Bengals 20-23 Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns registered their first win of the NFL season by edging out the Cincinnati Bengals in the ‘Battle of Ohio’ .

Seneca Wallace, starting ahead of the injured Jake Delhomme, tossed a touchdown while Peyton Hillis ran for another and Phil Dawson booted three field goals to give the Browns a hard-fought win over their cross-state rivals.

The victory overshadowed a milestone afternoon for Bengals wide receiver Terrell Owens, who moved into second place on the NFL list of career receiving yards.

Owens posted 10 catches for 222 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown, to move past Isaac Bruce and into second place on the all-time yardage list with 15,324.

Detroit Lions 26-28 Green Bay Packers

Charles Woodson returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown as the Packers narrowly held off a roaring comeback from the Lions on Sunday.

The Packers (3-1) led 28-14 after Woodson scored early in the third quarter, but the Lions hit back with four straight Jason Hanson field goals to cut the lead to two points.

For Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers threw for 181 yards with three touchdowns but also threw a pair of interceptions. Detroit were once again without injured quarterback Matthew Stafford, but back-up Shaun Hill threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns to Calvin Johnson.

The Lions (0-4), who made the game close despite committing 13 penalties, have now lost 20 consecutive games to the Packers in Wisconsin.

Carolina Panthers 14-16 New Orleans Saints – (NFL Highlights)

Veteran Carney kicked three field goals to help New Orleans edge out Carolina Panthers in a tight contest at the Louisiana Superdome.

The 46-year-old, who only rejoined the Saints on Tuesday, helped ease the pain of last week’s 27-24 loss at Atlanta.

While the Saints were able to manage only one touchdown on a screen pass to Lance Moore, Carney struck twice from 32 yards and again from 25 with less than four minutes left to seal the win.

Drew Brees passed for 275 yards as New Orleans avoided back-to-back losses despite turning the ball over twice on fumbles.

Baltimore Ravens 17-14 Pittsburgh Steelers – (NFL Highlights)

TJ Houshmandzadeh reached the end zone with 32 seconds remaining to hand Baltimore a last-gasp win over Pittsburgh in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Houshmandzadeh collected Joe Flacco’s pass in the dying stages to complete a dramatic comback on away turf.

The Steelers (3-1) took a 14-10 lead on Rashard Mendenhall’s seven-yard run midway through the fourth quarter and looked set for the win after turning away Baltimore on third and fourth-down plays with over 2 minutes remaining.

But a holding call on a punt gave Baltimore (3-1) the ball and Flacco found Anquan Boldin on two passes for 12 yards and Houshmandzadeh for 10 to set up the winning score.

Seattle Seahawks 3-20 St Louis Rams

St Louis Rams made it two wins on the spin for the first time in two years with another Sam Bradford-inspired win against Seattle.

Bradford completed 23 of 41 passes with one interception as the Rams (2-2) ended a 10-game losing streak against Seattle and eclipsed their entire win total from last year.

Steve Jackson made 70 yards on 22 carries and three catches for 54 yards, including a 49-yarder before Kenneth Darby scored on a 21-yard screen pass.

The Seahawks peaked with a 14-play drive in the first half that stalled, leaving them with only a chip-shot field goal by Olindo Mare.

Denver Broncos 26-20 Tennessee Titans – (NFL Highlights)

Kyle Orton threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Correll Buckhalter with 93 seconds remaining as Denver Broncos rallied to overcome Tennessee Titans.

The Titans (2-2) surrendered their lead when a pass interference penalty against Chris Hope set Denver up for the go-ahead score late on.

And the Broncos (2-2) sealed the win when Matt Prater kicked over his fourth field goal to pad the lead.

Tennessee had one last chance with 33 seconds left, but Vince Young’s third incompletion fell to the turf as time ran out.

New York Giants 17-3 Chicago Bears – (NFL Highlights)

The New York Giants ended Chicago’s unbeaten start to the season as they recorded a 17-3 victory.

The New York defence was a different class as they recorded nine sacks in the first half – with Bears quarterback Jay Cutler left with concussion after one hit from cornerback Aaron Ross.

However despite limiting the Bears to just 22 yards in offense in the opening half, New York’s attack let them down as they managed just a field goal from Lawrence Tynes to lead 3-0 at half-time.

The Giants, though, finally registered a touchdown in the third quarter after a eight-play, 90-yard attack was finished off by Ahmad Bradshaw.

Chicago responded with a 40-yard field goal from Robbie Gould, but it failed to trigger a fight back.

And the Giants made sure of the victory with Brandon Jacobs’ touchdown from close range.

Philadelphia Eagles 12-17 Washington Redskins

Donovan McNabb returned to haunt his former Eagles team-mates as he inspired Washington to a 17-12 victory.

McNabb was traded to the Redskins in April after spending 11 years at Philadelphia – and but he completed eight of 19 passes for 125 yards and threw one touchdown on his return.

Ryan Torain’s 12 yard run for the opening touchdown put the Redskins in front, before McNabb’s 31-yard pass to Chris Cooley doubled their advantage.

McNabb’s replacement at the Eagles, Michael Vick was left with chest and rib injuries after he was sandwiched on a hit by Kareem Moore and DeAngelo Hall late in the first quarter.

Kevin Kolb’s five yard touchdown pass to Brent Celek in the fourth quarter did cut the deficit, but it was too little, too late.

Jacksonville Jaguars 31-28 Indianapolis Colts

Underfire Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio was a relieved man after Josh Scobee’s late field goal snatched a shock victory over the Colts.

Scobee gave Jacksonville a much-needed boost when he slotted over from 59 yards with the final play of the game.

“I was real proud of the effort, it could have been a lot cleaner but it was gritty, it was determined and I am proud of the men in that locker room, Scobee in particular,” said Del Rio.

David Garrard and Maurice Jones-Drew both scored touchdowns for the Jaguars as they bounced back from their defeats to San Diego and Philadelphia.

Houston Texans 31-24 Oakland Raiders – (NFL Highlights)

Arian Foster crossed for two touchdowns as the Texans saw off the Raiders.

Foster was held from action until the second quarter, but he went on to score with a 74-yard run and then a 10-yard catch.

Houston now move to 3-1 for the season – with eight other teams having won three games so far.

San Diego Chargers 41-10 Arizona Cardinals – (NFL Highlights)

Antonio Gates led the way as San Diego outclassed Arizona.

Gates took 33 and 26-yard touchdown passes from Philip Rivers to become the seventh tight end in NFL history to take 500 catches.

Rookie running back Ryan Mathews also scored his first NFL touchdown, while Mike Tolbert recorded his first 100-yard running game in three seasons as Arizona were blown away.
