As the Phillies had recorded a win in the World Series Game 5, it is expected that fans would get to see some exciting performance from both the teams in Game 6. Yankees on Wednesday will host the Game 6 and this can give some advantage for the Yankees team. Phillies team will have to keep up their performance if they want to win the next match.
Seeking the win which would have secured their 27th title, the Yankees found themselves trailing 6-1 by the end of the third inning.
That became 8-2 at the bottom of the seventh, and despite a Yankees fightback the visitors had left themselves with too much work to do.
Chase Utley’s two home runs for the Phillies means he now has five in the series, equalling the World Series record, and the Yankees have plenty of work still to do after having their lead slashed to 3-2.
The Yankees went ahead but Utley’s three-run homer put the Phillies in front after the first inning, and he smashed the ball into the stands again in the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-2.
Scores from Johnny Damon, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada meant it was tense at the finish, before the Citizens Bank Stadium erupted as the Phillies stepped up the defence of their title.
The Yankees, who have won the Series eight previous times they had taken a 3-1 lead, will try to close out their 27th on Wednesday night at home.
Game 3 winner Andy Pettitte is expected to come back after three days’ rest and face Game 2 loser Pedro Martinez.
Alex Rodriguez put the New York Yankees on the brink of their 27th World Series with the greatest hit of his superstar career.
Rodriguez smashed a two-out double in the ninth innings to score Johnny Damon off third base and the Yankees beat reigning champion Philadelphia 7-4 to seize a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
“I’ve never had a bigger hit,” said Rodriguez. “When I get good pitches to hit and I put a good swing on it, good things usually happen.”
Rodriguez’s other big contribution in this series as game-three homer off a television camera to spark a comeback victory.
The Yankees, whose wage bill of $201 million is baseball’s largest, have not won a World Series crown since 2000 but now have the champagne on ice again.
“We haven’t accomplished anything yet,” Damon said. “We’ve won three games. That’s not what we set out to do. We would like the fourth.”
New York can claim the crown by winning game five when southpaw pitcher Cliff Lee, Philadelphia’s game one winner, goes against A.J. Burnett, who won game two.
“It’s going to be a great challenge,” Rodriguez said. “We have to stay very focused. Those guys are the world champs. They are going to come out fighting and so are we.”
Teams with a 3-1 edge have won the World Series 34 of 40 times, the most recent failure being when St. Louis dropped the last three games to Kansas City to lose the 1985 Series.
