The New York Yankees won the 2009 World Series and the amazing statistics of NY Yankees Hideki Matsui made him the MVP. Dubbed in the news as “Statsui”, Hideki Matsui is the first Japanese-born player to win the MVP trophy for the Most Valuable Player of the World Series. Hideki Matsui had 6 RBIs in game six of World Series 2009.
Japan nearly came to a standstill as millions watched on TV while Hideki Matsui, the man they know as Godzilla, led the Yankees to the World Series title. In a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night, this is the first time the Yankees had won the championship in nine years, and the 27th World Series title overall in team history. Hideki Matsui, 35, is a designated hitter for the New York Yankees. He bats left-handed and throws right-handed. It’s a combination that apparently works as he helped bring the NY Yankees to their 27th World Series win. Hideki Matsui was born in Neagari, Ishikawa, Japan. Matsui originally batted right-handed as a child. However, when he started playing with his older brother and his friends, Matsui was such a good batter that his embarrassed brother insisted that he bat left-handed or stop playing with them. Matsui soon enough became an overpowering left-handed batter, and stayed on that side of the plate from then on.
Matsui signed with the Yankees in December 2002. A parade was held for him in Tokyo to celebrate his signing with the Yankees and many reporters and photographers followed him to MLB from his home in Tokyo. In his first Major League at-bat he hit an RBI single. His first game at Yankee Stadium, the 2003 Yankee home opener, was memorable as Matsui became the first Yankee to hit a grand slam in his first game at Yankee Stadium.
The World Series MVP Award is given to the player who is deemed to have the most impact on his team’s performance in the World Series. Even though Matsui is the MVP and helped bring the NY Yankees to the World Series win, he will become a free agent within the next two weeks. With no need for a full-time DH, the Yankees are not likely to re-sign him.
So, an MVP doesn’t guarantee a contract in the world of baseball. For Matsui, his victory will shine this week and hopefully fans will get a glimpse of him in Friday’s parade in NYC.
Matsui could retire but it seems as if he is hoping to continue playing major league baseball.Yankees Win World Series 2009 In 6 Games
It took the New York Yankees six games, but they are the World Series 2009 Champions. They beat the defending World Series Champs, Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in game 6.
The Yankees won the World Series 2009 four games over two. The only two losses that the Yankees suffered were against the Phillies’ ace pitcher Cliff Lee in games one and five.
The Yankees were led by the World Series MVP Hideki Matsui, Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon and Alex Rodriguez. Matsui batted in six of the seven runs scored by the Yankees in game 6 on his way to winning the MVP honors.
Jeter was the Yankees consistent hitter. While he never hit a home run during the World Series, Jeter was getting on base and being in scoring position when he was needed to be.
Damon and Rodriguez will each go down as being involved in two remarkable plays. Rodriguez for hitting a home run off of a TV camera that resulted in the first ever instant replay of the postseason. Damon for stealing both second and third bases in the ninth inning to secure the win for the Yankees in game 4.
Game 6 of the Yankees vs Phillies World Series was the first time in six years that the World Series has gone to six games. If the Phillies would have been able to force a game 7, then they could have possibly repeated as champions. Instead, the Yankees won their 27th title in 40 World Series. That is pretty impressive considering this was only the 105th World Series.
In game 6, the Yankees wasted no time in taking control of the score and the game. Matsui began the scoring in the second inning with a two run homer to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
The Phillies struck back in the third inning when Carlos Ruiz scored off of a sacrificed fly by Jimmy Rollins. The Yankees doubled that in the bottom of the third when Matsui again knocked in more runs. Jeter and Damon both scored off of Matsui’s single. Yankees 4-1.
The Yankees scored again in the fifth inning. Mark Teixeira knocked in the Yankees only run not by Matsui during game 6, when his single scored Jeter.
Matsui then came up to bat and doubled bringing Teixeira and Rodriguez in for two more runs. The Yankees were up 7-1.
The Phillies scored two more runs in the sixth inning the make the final score be 7-3. Ryan Howard hit a two run homer to score Chase Utley. The Phillies’ hottest hitter during the World Series 2009, Utley was not allowed any home runs in game 6.
— Yankees win World Series 2009 —
I’ve been a diehard Yankees fan since I was five years old. My dad worked two jobs and some of the longest quality time I got with him was watching Yankees games together. Today my husband and sons are also diehard Yankees fan. I recently wrote a post, What The New York Yankees Did For My BIL, about the way the new Yankees Stadium treated my BIL with cancer. They were very kind, generous and accommodating and made him feel like a star himself! I didn’t even know whether Yankees win World Series 2009 last night because I feel asleep during the 8th inning! It was a long day and they were in the lead so I figured they would win. I knew they won by the joyful bellowing from my husband! This morning the first thing my son asked was whether the Yankees won. He was very exicited to hear “Yankees win World Series 2009″ on the morning news! He also said he feels Matsui’s position on the team is secure now since he score two homeruns, a double, one strikeout and 6 RBI’s. The commemorative goodies are already being marketed. Right after the Yankees won, I received an email from Macy’s announcing their Waterford crystal World Series commemorative baseball – for a mere $165! While I don’t think we’ll get this one, we did enroll our son in the fan club as a Christmas present. Way to go, Yankees…
